Vy\u0161ehrad \u2013 a place steeped in legends\n<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Alois Jir\u00e1sek<\/strong>, one of the most significant Czech writers of all time, studied old chronicles tracing the history of this breathtaking place. In his\u00a0Ancient Bohemian Legends<\/strong>\u00a0(Star\u00e9 pov\u011bsti \u010desk\u00e9), Jir\u00e1sek narrates about\u00a0Libu\u0161e<\/strong>, a legendary princess, who is said to have foreseen the glorious future of Prague from her residence in Vy\u0161ehrad. Other characters that appear in his masterpiece are\u00a0Bivoj<\/strong>, a legendary strongman who is said to have been able to catch a wild boar with his bare hands and bring it to Libu\u0161e on his shoulders, or\u00a0\u0160em\u00edk<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 a legendary horse that is said to have jumped from the Vy\u0161ehrad rock all the way down to the Vltava.\u00a0Jir\u00e1sek also mentions legends related to other places such as\u00a0Divok\u00e1 \u0160\u00e1rka<\/a>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The seat of the king\n<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Vy\u0161ehrad was built in the 10th century during the rule of the P\u0159emyslid dynasty. Constructed to serve as a fort, Vy\u0161ehrad became the seat of the first Czech king\u00a0Vratislav (Vratislaus) I<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>who also had\u00a0St. Peter and Paul\u2019s Basilica<\/strong>\u00a0built here. St. Martin\u2019s Rotunda, the oldest rotunda in Prague, also comes from this period. With a diameter of 6.5 metres it is also the largest rotunda in Prague. What is also impressive is that its walls are one meter thick. The place was also popular with Charles IV, who decided, out of respect for his P\u0159emyslid predecessors, to renew its significance.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Worth the mention is also a cemetery situated in Vy\u0161ehrad. Founded in 1260, the cemetery is the final resting place of over 600 outstanding artists and writers, who played a significant part in the history of Czech culture.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
